Comfortable but Costly – Reviewing the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Aug 19,2022

A Jeep is often associated with the rough-and-rugged image of a Wrangler. However, the Grand Cherokee is equally vital to the success of the beloved off-road brand in terms of fame and sales.

The Grand Cherokee’s attraction is further intensified by its combination of off-road abilities and on-road refinements, an array of luxury and comfort features, and the outdoorsy appearance which is endearing to almost every Jeep lover. A trio of power-trains is available, including the familiar V-8 and V-6 options, along with a new hybrid plug-in variant that the brand refers to as ‘4xE’.

Read on for a comprehensive review of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review

The V6 base engine is adequately powerful, and although the acceleration is not exactly thrilling, it is good enough for pretty much every driving situation, including highway passing and merging. The V8 engine is a lot more compelling – both in terms of throttle and sound.

With the V6 engine, the 2022 Grand Cherokee can fetch you 26 miles-per-gallon on the highway and 19 miles-per-gallon within the city – these ratings are about average for this class. Upgrade to the V8 engine, and the mileage drops to 22 mpg and 14 mpg on the highway and in the city, respectively.

The fuel economy estimates for the plug-in hybrid 4xe models are not yet available. However, according to Jeep, you can go all-electric for 24 miles, after which the car will switch to gasoline. On a typical household outlet, it will take you around 12 hours to fully charge the battery. However, on a 240-volt outlet, the charging time drops to two hours.

Handling and Ride

The Grand Cherokee is as close to a dream drive as one can get. With nimble handling and accurate steering, you can maneuver the crowded city streets or race along the country roads without any problems. Speaking of maneuvering, the Jeep’s high maneuverability also makes it easy to park. But, even all of this pales in front of the vehicle’s ride quality: the Grand Cherokee 2022 glides over potholes, bumps, and other irregularities without breaking a sweat.

Off-Road Performance

All Cherokee trims offer four-wheel drives and are capable off-roaders, but the standout performer has to be the Trailhawk model. This trim comes with a limited-slip differential, an off-road camera, a terrain management system, a sway bar, skid plates, and tow hooks (a few of these features also come standard with other models). The Trailhawk can be likened to a mountain goat, handling rocky inclines and muddy clefts effortlessly.

Towing Capacity

With the right equipment, the Grand Cherokee can tow a maximum of 7,200 pounds.

The dated interior of the outgoing Cherokee has been replaced with an entirely modernized cabin. The interior of the Grand Cherokee 2022 has a really nice feel: it is well-crafted and handsome, and the more expensive models would definitely qualify as luxury SUVs.

Cargo Space

Depending on your perspective, this SUV’s cargo capacity can be poor or decent. It offers 37.7 cubic feet of space behind the back seats, going up to 70.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. If the comparison is restricted to two-row rivals, you will find that this cargo space is fairly decent. However, once the comparison extends to the entire midsize SUV class (including three-row participants), the Grand Cherokee’s cargo space suddenly begins to appear subpar.

Passenger Space

The Grand Cherokee 2022 can accommodate five people. Naturally, since the class also includes three-row SUVs, the Cherokee does not lead the list in terms of passenger space. Having said that, both Cherokee rows have plenty of legroom and headroom for taller occupants, and the seats are supportive, comfortable, and adequate for longer trips.

Navigation, Bluetooth, and Infotainment

The Cherokee’s infotainment setup is hard to rival. The Uconnect interface is intuitive and responsive in every aspect. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto let you seamlessly sync the system with your smartphone, and these features can even be upgraded to function wirelessly.

A passenger-side touch-screen is also available; this screen can either assist the driver by delivering navigation info to the main screen or serve to entertain the front-seat passenger.

The standard infotainment features include a six-speaker stereo, an 8.4-inch touch-screen, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The additional available infotainment features include a passenger-side 10.25-inch touch-screen, a 10.1 inch main touch-screen, an Alpine nine-speaker stereo, navigation, HD Radio, McIntosh stereo, satellite radio, wireless device charging, a rear-seat entertainment system, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Extra standard features include a digital gauge cluster (10.25-inch), automatic dual-zone climatic control, and push-button start.

Other available features include a sunroof, another dual-pane panoramic sunroof, remote start, and quad-zone automatic climatic control.

The Grand Cherokee received a predicted reliability score of 84/100 from J.D Power.

A reliability score of 0-69 is Fair (also seen as below average); 70-80 is Average; 81-90 is great; and 91-100 is Best.

The Grand Cherokee is covered under a limited warranty of three years or 36,000 miles, and a 60,000 mile or five-year power-train warranty.

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) gave the Cherokee 2022 a four-star rating for the rear-wheel-drive trims and a five-star safety rating for the all-wheel-drive models. In either setup, this jeep received a five-star rating in the side crash test and a four-star rating in the frontal crash test. As far as the rollover test goes, the 4WD model earned four stars, while the RWD could only manage three.

Final Verdict

The Grand Cherokee 2022 has undergone a complete redesign. A number of notable upgrades have been made but without sacrificing the jeep’s core personality. It has one of the best interiors in its class, promises a smooth and plush ride, and is still a fairly good off-roader. At a starting price of $51,545, it is quite expensive but still offers decent value for money.
