The Jeep Compass's Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System is an intelligent, responsive system allowing drivers to choose from various on- and off-road traction settings for different weather and road conditions. Snow Mode: For driving in slippery snowy conditions. Snow mode increases the traction of all wheels, making acceleration and braking more responsive. Mud/Sand Mode: For driving in loose sand or mud. Mud/Sand mode reduces power to the rear wheels and redirects it to the front wheels for maximum grip. Rock Mode: For driving over rocky terrain. Rock mode reduces the power delivery to all wheels but uses the brakes to keep them from spinning so you can have maximum traction regardless of what's under your tires. Auto Mode: Auto mode is similar to Normal mode in that it has the same settings no matter what you are driving on, but when you engage Auto, it automatically adjusts those settings The Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System’s three driver-selectable modes – Snow, Sand, and Mud – can be activated by a simple turn of the rotary knob at the center of the console. The system is equipped with sensors that detect tire slippage at each wheel individually, actively managing traction to help maintain vehicle stability while maximizing forward progress through whatever conditions are encountered. For added confidence on slippery roads, the Selec-Terrain® system uses Hill Descent Control to keep the vehicle from rolling backward on steep grades when descending hills in specific modes.
